Reasons for Regain #1: I stopped cooking

Photo by kenjonbro / by CC BY-NC 2.0

As I’ve mentioned, I’ve regained weight since I was at my slimmest several years ago. The weight started to come back after I got a headache that still hasn’t gone away and I started eating my way through the pain. Chocolate-covered pretzels. Mint chocolate chip ice cream. Krispy Kreme donuts. You kept me sane and I thank you, but you also made me fat again. However, I do not regret what I ate during that first year or two of the headache because it was all that kept me from going nuts. I went for chocolate-covered nuts instead. Eating felt good at a time when I never felt good.

However, I’ve been managing my headache better lately and it’s nowhere near as agonizing as it used to be. So when I look back on the past few years I have to admit that I’ve gotten lazy. I’ve stopped doing the work necessary to keep me healthy and thin. (I realize thin and healthy don’t always coincide, but for me [...]

Orange you glad you had Orange Cappuccino and/or Orange Café while it lasted?

If you’re a fan of the General Mills International Orange Cappuccino coffee mix which was renamed to the Maxwell House Orange Café coffee mix a few years ago, well I hope you stocked up when you were preparing for the zombie apocalypse. It appears that the coffee mix my mother so loves and was so devastated to lose three years ago and then so thrilled to discover in new packaging a few months later is finally going the way of Almost Home Cookies, Jell-O 3-2-1 and other beloved prepackaged food products of yore. As my mother recently reported, she cannot find it in Indianapolis!

I think it is gone for good this time. A week ago it was not to be found at the [closest] Target. This week I checked the other Target and even Kroger that charges a dollar more per can with no luck. – Mom. October 5, 2012

Yes, my mother loves this coffee so much she was willing to pay a dollar more for it. That is a big deal for a woman [...]

The New York Diaries – Part 1: Taking New York living for a test drive (though I would never drive in the city)

Getting there is half the challenge

No matter how many times I fly, I always lean toward the window to scope out the city as we land. I’m surprised everyone on the plane doesn’t do this. (Where is your sense of childlike wonder, people? You can’t buy it in Sky Mall.) Despite my superhuman LASIK vision or how far I leaned into the personal space of the occupant of the window seat next me, all I could see was white. Plain, solid, white. I started to wonder if we’d died mid-flight and were now soaring through the afterlife without knowing it. But no! About 20 seconds before we touched down the fog we’d been flying through cleared enough that I could see the ground.

I took a shared van into the city and couldn’t see the skyline at all, which would have been a huge disappointment if this had been my first trip to New York. Fortunately, I was too distracted trying to check into JFK airport on Foursquare to pay much attention anyway. I used [...]

Kellogg’s FiberPlus® Plus Up Your Day $100 gift card giveaway

Disclosure: I received free samples of FiberPlus products and a $100 American Express gift card to write this post.

I don’t do many giveaways here on JenFul, but I make exceptions for products I actually use and think my readers might like. FiberPlus contacted me recently to see if I was interested in their Plus Up Your Day promotion, so I said yes because I sometimes buy their FiberPlus bars when I’m traveling by plane. I like to cram cereal bars in my suitcase because they’re small, they don’t go bad, and they’re unlikely to trigger a security pat down. Unlike an apple or a pear I don’t have to find a trash can to throw the core out. I can just cram the leftover wrapper in my pocket. Fiber is supposed to fill you up which is good on a long plane trip with only peanuts and Biscoff cookies to sustain you courtesy of Delta airlines. And because they are high in fiber I have incentive not to eat ALL five bars before takeoff unless [...]

Chocolate & Vicodin: My Quest for Relief from the Headache that Wouldn't Go Away Half-Assed: A Weight-Loss Memoir

Jennette Fulda tells stories to the Internet about her life as a smartass, writer, chronic headache sufferer, (former?) weight-loss inspiration, and overall nice person (who is silently judging you). She was formerly known as PastaQueen. You can contact her if you promise to be nice.
