I sometimes come up with weird themes for music mixes. There was the Same Title, Different Song mix and the Aging mix back when I blogged at PastaQueen.com. Here on JenFul I came up with the Callback mix and the Opposites mix.
My latest idea is the “Just Like…” mix which only includes songs with titles that start with the phrase “Just Like.” Granted, this mix was pretty easy to put together after I loaded all my MP3s in WinAmp and searched for the phrase “just like.”
The Cure – Just Like Heaven
James – Just Like Fred Astaire
Jesus and Mary Chain – Just Like Honey
Pink – Just Like a Pill
John Lennon – Just Like Starting Over
Bob Dylan – Just Like a Woman (YouTube only has a live version)
Happy Rhodes – Just Like Tivoli
Bell X1 – Just Like Mr.Benn
Brett Dennen – Just Like The Moon
Old 97′s – Just Like California
Feel free to suggest some more in the comments. And here’s a YouTube playlist of all the songs, because I’ve learned how to [...]

It was Vanessa Carlton’s new song “I Don’t Want to Be a Bride” that inspired this mix idea. I like Carlton’s song because it expresses the increasingly common decision many couples are making to be life partners without ever getting married. I’m referring to straight couples as well as gay couples who don’t have the rights yet. I don’t know whether or not I would get married if I met the right person (so don’t freak out, Mom), but I know I’ve never sat around dreaming about my wedding. If anything, the idea of planning a huge party stresses me out. This is anathema to everything the bridal industry tries to sell you about your wedding day and how it will be the most magical, perfect day of your life, and how you’d better spend lots of cash to make it that way. (I am glad some people buy into that idea though because my mom is a bridal seamstress and she needs to pay the rent. But please, [...]

My “Mix it up” posts are evidently going to be a series because I can’t stop thinking of ideas for CD mixes. Which is strange because I haven’t actually sent a CD mix to anyone lately. I’m full of ideas though! My last two mixes can be found on my old PastaQueen site. They were The Aging Mix and the Same Title, Different Song mix.
This time I want to put together a mix of songs that callback to one another or are linked in some way. Usually it’s because one song references the other song. Here’s what I’ve got so far:
Lloyd Cole and The Commotions – Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken?
Camera Obscura – Lloyd, I’m Ready To Be Heartbroken
The link between these two is pretty obvious. The first song is asking if you’re ready to be heartbroken and then Camera Obscura let’s good old Lloyd know that, yes, they’re ready to be heartbroken.
Neil Young – Southern Man
Lynard Skynard – Sweet Home Alabama
The Neil Young song is critical of [...]
