JenFul Playlist – September 2013

Photo by Thomas Nielsen / by CC BY-SA 2.0

Another month, another playlist. Here’s a list of the songs I was listening to in September 2013. You can listen to the playlist in the Spotify player below if you have Spotify installed. If not, the playlist is listed in text below that. You can follow me on Spotify here and view my other playlists here.

Highlights

Rachel Platten – Nothing Ever Happens

This song sums up the story of half my life which is as the lyrics say, “Nothing ever happens if you stay in your room.” Well, reading and TV watching and the occasional blog entry happen, but I know that’s not what she’s talking about. “Make a little space and get out of your own way.” Very true, Rachel.

MIKA – Popular Song

I saw the video for this song on TV. (Yes, the Palladia channel airs three hours of music videos every weekday morning. I was shocked too.) Anyway, when it got to the chorus I realized it sounded almost exactly like the song “Popular” from the musical [...]

It’s that time of the month again when I inflict my amazing taste in music upon you. You can listen to my August 2013 playlist in the Spotify player below if you have Spotify installed. Vicci Martinez

I don’t watch The Voice on NBC, but I do know that it’s been more successful at making its judges famous than its contestants. Which is why I had no idea Vicci Martinez had been a contestant until after I’d listened to her album and Googled her. I had her album on repeat for at least a week.

CHVRCHES

That should be pronounced “churches.” I think the band switched out the “u” with a “v” to make it easier to find them on Google. I’m really, really looking forward to this band’s first album to be released later this month. I’ve been listing to their electro-pop EPs a lot lately.

Wolf Gang

I’ve [...]

JenFul Playlist – July 2013

I’d meant to write a few more posts before publishing another playlist, but I didn’t and August has already arrived, so here we go again! These are the songs I was enjoying in July 2013. You can listen to them in the Spotify player below if you have Spotify installed. If not, the playlist is listed in text below that. You can follow me on Spotify here and catch the June 2013 playlist here in case you missed it.

Highlights

The 1975 – Chocolate

Of course I’m going to like a song called “Chocolate,” right? This is a UK band who’ve released several EPs but their first album doesn’t come out until September.

Elizaveta – Orion

Spotify recommended this artist to me, doing their algorithms proud. I’d never heard of this Russian/American musician before, but I loved her whole album.

Bastille – Pompeii

Bastille’s album debuted at #1 on the UK charts, but I don’t think it’s been released in the US yet, which is why only a few EPs are available on the American [...]

JenFul Playlist: June 2013

I am old enough to remember the days when people traded mixed tapes with friends. Not CDs, actual cassette tapes with the playlist written in pen on the paper label. It was like telling someone, “I like this so much! Do you like it too? Let’s like it together!” I still remember who gave me my first Tori Amos tape and the person who included a Les Miserables song on their mix. Of course, there were some “eh” songs on any tape, but the good ones made the “eh” worth it.

I like listening to new (to me) music and I like sharing it. For a long time I’ve been meaning to post playlists of the music I’ve discovered each month, partly to share, and partly to have a record of what I was listening to when. So many songs are linked to certain times of my life. The aforementioned Tori Amos is heavily associated with my high school and college years. Several Brit pop hits remind me of my [...]

Mix it up: Just like a mix

I sometimes come up with weird themes for music mixes. There was the Same Title, Different Song mix and the Aging mix back when I blogged at PastaQueen.com. Here on JenFul I came up with the Callback mix and the Opposites mix.

My latest idea is the “Just Like…” mix which only includes songs with titles that start with the phrase “Just Like.” Granted, this mix was pretty easy to put together after I loaded all my MP3s in WinAmp and searched for the phrase “just like.”

The Cure – Just Like Heaven

James – Just Like Fred Astaire

Jesus and Mary Chain – Just Like Honey

Pink – Just Like a Pill

John Lennon – Just Like Starting Over

Bob Dylan – Just Like a Woman (YouTube only has a live version)

Happy Rhodes – Just Like Tivoli

Bell X1 – Just Like Mr.Benn

Brett Dennen – Just Like The Moon

Old 97’s – Just Like California

Feel free to suggest some more in the comments. And here’s a YouTube playlist of all the songs, because I’ve learned how to [...]

Chocolate & Vicodin: My Quest for Relief from the Headache that Wouldn't Go Away Half-Assed: A Weight-Loss Memoir

Jennette Fulda tells stories to the Internet about her life as a smartass, writer, chronic headache sufferer, (former?) weight-loss inspiration, and overall nice person (who is silently judging you). She was formerly known as PastaQueen. You can contact her if you promise to be nice.
